Thinning ice on the Aletsch Glacier, 1987-2014

These images, acquired over the Alps by the Landsat 5 and 8 satellites, show the significant thinning of the Aletsch Glacier, which is highlighted in the images. The first two images were both captured on 30 June 1987; the first in visible colour and the second in infrared. The third image, captured on 8 June 2014, is in visible colour. The Aletsch Glacier, the largest glacier in the Alps, spans about 23 km and covers more than 120 square kilometres in the eastern Bernese Alps in the Swiss canton of Valais.
