Development of Hong Kong International Airport, 1988-2010

Hong Kong International Airport, the main airport in Hong Kong, is colloquially known as Chek Lap Kok Airport and was built on the island of Chek Lap Kok through land reclamation. The airport began commercial operations in 1998. These satellite images trace the development of the airport from 1988 to 2010. The first image is a multi-layer image created by merging three images captured in 1992, 1999, and 2010, showing the progressive development of the airport. The second image is a collage of pictures used to create the first multi-layer image. The third image is a collage depicting the building phases of the airport from 1993 to 2010. The fourth image shows the initial stages of construction and the two islands, including Chek Lap Kok, from 1988 to 2000, before significant construction began. The last image, captured in 2000, displays the expansive area where the new Hong Kong Airport was constructed, along with infrastructures along the coast that facilitate easier connection to the city.
