Hurricane Katrina, 2005

In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast with powerful winds and heavy rains, causing severe flooding, particularly in New Orleans, Louisiana. The first image, acquired on August 25, shows Hurricane Katrina over Florida and Cuba, while the second, taken on August 28, captures the hurricane over the Gulf of Mexico. The third image, also from August 28, presents a different satellite view of the hurricane, acquired by the Envisat ASAR satellite. The fourth image compares two perspectives of Hurricane Katrina using data from both the ASAR and MERIS instruments, captured on August 28 over the Gulf of Mexico. The fifth image is a multi-temporal image merging three different snapshots of New Orleans before, during, and after Hurricane Katrina, with flood-affected areas highlighted in green. Subsequent images, acquired by ERS-1 in May 1992, ERS-2 in September 2005, and Envisat in October 2010, were used to create this composite. The ninth image, taken in August 2005, shows the damaged Interstate 10 bridge over Lake Pontchartrain. The tenth image, from September 2005, displays New Orleans shortly after the flooding. The final multi-temporal image highlights the flood impacts in 2005 with data from May, June, and September.
