Algal blooms in Lake Erie (North America), 2011

These images, acquired by the Envisat satellite, show algal blooms in Lake Erie. The first image captures the largest algae bloom in 2011, which extended from Toledo to beyond Cleveland and along the Ontario shore. The subsequent images illustrate the algal blooms in the years 2008, 2005, and 2003. The last image is a collage that depicts changes in Lake Erie from October 2002 to October 2011.
