Fire in Yosemite National Park (USA), September 2013

In August 2013, the Rim Fire started in the Stanislaus National Forest and quickly spread to parts of Yosemite National Park. Fueled by dry vegetation and harsh winds, the fire prompted extensive evacuations and threatened thousands of structures. The first two multi-spectral images, acquired by the Landsat 8 satellite over Yosemite National Park (California) on 31 August and 09 September respectively, show the area burnt during the fire. The forest area that was burnt is recognizable in dark violet, with high columns of smoke rising into the sky. The last two images provide comparisons of the area before and after the fire.
