Oil Spill in Oporto (Portugal), October 1994

In October 1994, an oil spill occurred off the coast of Oporto, Portugal, causing environmental damage to the coastal waters and nearby beaches. This ERS-1 satellite image was captured two days after the accident, showing the oil spill as a black mark on the SAR image due to the damping effect, which reduces the roughness of the sea surface. The spill is visible floating along the coast and extending into the sea, with the coastal city of Oporto appearing as a cluster of white dots near the center of the affected area.
