Oil Spill In Wales (UK), February 1996

On February 15, 1996, the oil tanker Sea Empress struck a rock off St. Anne's Head near Milford Haven, UK, leading to a major oil spill. These images, captured by RADARSAT, ERS-1, and ERS-2 satellites, show how changing wind conditions affect oil spill visibility. The first image reveals isolated black spots indicating pollution in conditions of low to medium wind. The second image shows a large dark area in Carmarthen Bay due to calm winds, along with smaller slicks along the coast. In the third image, very low wind conditions obscure oil slicks in the bay, though two slicks near Cape St. Govans appear as narrow strips parallel to the shore.
