Highlands (Scotland), 2002

This ERS SAR image captures the central Scottish Highlands between the North Sea and the North Minch. The brighter highlands, due to boggy soil's high water content, contrast with the darker valleys used as pasture. Visible are the A9 highway's three bridges, notably the northernmost at Dornoch Firth and further south, the Cromarty Firth with ships and structures as bright points. In the upper left corner the sea appears bright, influenced by the radar's steep incidence angle rather than just high winds.
