Title: Mapping changes in Earth’s magnetic field
Description: The top picture (a) maps the radial part of Earth’s magnetic field at the core-mantle boundary, showing its basic dipole structure. However, there are fluctuating non-dipole structures that produce changes in Earth’s magnetic field (b). By taking many images like this, accumulated over ten years, and combining them with numerical simulations, the researchers could produce detailed maps showing the circulation of the flow of the conductive metal in Earth’s outer core (c).
