The European Space Agency and the Norwegian Space Centre jointly organised the fourth SAR oceanography workshop, 'SEASAR 2012', entitled 'Advances in SAR Oceanography'. It was hosted in Tromsø, Norway, from 18 to 22 June 2012.

The workshop was open to scientists and students in the field of SAR oceanography including ESA Principle Investigators and co-investigators, to users of data from SAR missions including Sentinel-1 and the RADARSAT Constellation Mission (RCM) and to representatives from national, European and international space agencies and value adding industry.

Objectives

The main objectives for the SEASAR 2012 workshop were to:

• Report on progress/status of recommendations of SeaSAR 2010
• Provide a forum for scientific exchange and to assess the state of art in SAR coastal and marine applications
• Initiate and encourage close collaboration between individual research groups
• Agree and disseminate benchmark algorithms
• Formulate recommendations for algorithm and new products development
• Present exploitation results from spaceborne SAR missions and application projects
• Present SAR marine and ice services developed under the GMES framework
• Present the mission status of future missions including ESA Sentinel-1 and CSA RCM
• Consult with users of future missions including Sentinel-1 and RCM
