In August 2006, Hurricane Ernesto formed in the Atlantic Ocean, initially making landfall in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. As it progressed, Ernesto weakened slightly before re-strengthening over the warm waters of the Florida Straits. By the time it reached the southern tip of Florida, including the Miami area, Ernesto brought heavy rainfall and gusty winds, prompting precautionary measures and temporary disruptions.
